Bio-individuality

“Quod ali cibus est aliis fuat acre venenum.” is an idea that dates back to the Roman philosopher and poet, Lucretius.

It translates to “What is food to one is bitter poison to another.”

My approach to health coaching is one that honors each individual and their specific needs, or their bio-individuality. Too often, health and wellness advice can feel very narrow and prescriptive. You likely know someone who is thriving on a Keto or Paleo or Vegan diet and, with wonderful intentions, insistent that everyone should follow the same plan. Bio-individuality is the idea that each person has unique needs, and those needs will likely change over time. This means there is no one diet, exercise plan, or lifestyle that works for everyone. There are many variables to consider such as genetics, metabolism, age, stress levels, personal preferences, culture and environment. For example, people respond differently to certain foods. One person may feel best eating a plant-based diet while another might thrive on a high protein diet that includes animal products. An individual’s nutritional needs vary based on the current state of their health, body type, and activity level. One person may feel their best running every day while another may find yoga to be the thing that energizes them. Two people could follow the same plan and have their bodies respond completely differently. Even a person’s personality type should be considered when creating a plan for their health journey. What works for one person might not work for another and we cannot approach wellness with a one size fits all attitude. A health coach is trained to help you navigate this reality and work towards finding what works best for your unique body, preferences and lifestyle.
